| This style of surface decoration
is called “chip carving” because of its similarity to the wood working
technique of the same name. Cast chip carving is the dominant form of
relief modeling in early medieval Celtic jewelry. It can be recognized by
the way that the narrow linear patterns are highlighted against a very
regular faceted background that tapers into inverted pyramids and V shaped
valleys. |
